Welcome to the 2010 AME Health State of the Art Technical Meeting
Sharing promising practices and innovative problem-solving: among countries, missions, and with headquarters.

Welcome to the Web site for the 2010 AME State of the Art (SOTA) Technical Meeting. The SOTA is scheduled for Monday, October 25, through Friday, October 29, 2010. Participants should plan to arrive no later than Sunday, October 24, 2010.

The SOTA is a unique opportunity for USAID Health Sector staff to obtain updates on critical technical issues, programmatic issues, and other topics. It also provides a forum for exchange of information and ideas with colleagues in other Missions and USAID/W. This training and regional knowledge sharing is expected to improve working relationships, particularly among new USAID staff. This year’s meeting will help staff understand the implications of new initiatives, such as the Global Health Initiative and Feed the Future.

The theme for the meeting is:

Sharing promising practices and innovative problem-solving: among countries, missions, and with headquarters.

Meeting goals are:

  • Participants report having updated knowledge on state-of-the-art technical issues relevant to them.
  • Participants report increased understanding of the pertinent policy priorities of the new administration and can articulate the implications for their work.
  • Participants’ ability to represent the agency effectively and comply with USG and Agency requirements is strengthened through updated legal guidance.
  • Participants’ leadership role in a whole-of-government environment is strengthened with increased knowledge of GHI principles including HSS.

The meeting will provide participants with opportunities to build skills and increase knowledge on scientific issues, policies, and current programming trends, as well as opportunities for sharing lessons learned with key experts. In addition, there will be time to strengthen working relationships among operating units and facilitate ongoing communications between Missions and Washington.
Content is based on the results of a survey of field staff.  The meeting will include sessions that focus on the traditional health elements, as well as cross-cutting management, professional development, and Agency issues.

Sessions will be conducted using plenary and “breakout” formats. In addition, “open space” will be provided for participants so they can discuss topics of specialized interest and share best practices. Optional field trips may also be included in the SOTA offerings.

We will be in contact with some of you about the specifics of the meeting, including participation, presentations, panels, and discussion groups. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need assistance.

We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the meeting.

Sincerely,
AME and GH Planning Team
